How are tackles calculated?

Learn how your tackle settings can stack

Written by Jacob

When entering point values in your scoring settings, we encourage you to take a close look at them, especially if your league uses IDPs (Individual Defensive Players).

It’s easy for points to stack if you assign values to multiple tackle related categories. For example, a tackle and an assisted tackle can both award points on the same play.

Tackles

The value assigned to Tackle will stack with any values assigned to:

  • Solo Tackle

  • Assisted Tackle

  • Tackle For Loss

  • Sack

If you do not want these stats to stack, we recommend assigning values only to Solo Tackle, Assisted Tackle, and Sack, while leaving Tackles set to 0.

A Sack is considered a tackle of the quarterback at or behind the line of scrimmage, resulting in no gain or negative yardage.

This stat is especially useful for leagues that do not award points for Tackles. For leagues that already score Tackles and Tackles For Loss, Sack scoring can be used as an additional bonus.

Most standard non-IDP leagues do not award points for Tackles.

Instead, they usually score only major defensive events such as:

  • Defensive Touchdowns

  • Sacks

  • Interceptions

  • Fumbles

  • Blocked Kicks

  • Safeties

Advice for IDP Values

We generally recommend not assigning a value to Tackles unless you intentionally want it to act as a bonus on top of Solo and Assisted Tackles.

This setup allows you to give different values for solo tackles and assisted tackles while properly rewarding overall defensive performance.
